There's Lots of Rock on the Horizon!
It's been a little quiet around Culpeper since we closed down the Culpeper Rock Academy, but all is not lost. There are shows being planned for the spring and there will be plenty to do in the coming months - starting in early April.
On April 12th, CCHS senior Brett Jenkins is hosting "A Taste of Music" at the CCHS auditorium.
Rock bands, Rude Buddha, Rath, Ryan Benyo, James Madison University's all-girl a capella group, The Bluestones, the all-girl local band, Krush, David Gilmore, Aubrey Driggers, Possum Rdge String band, the celtic band, AON, Culpeper's youth worship band, Hooked, CCHS Jazz Band, CCHS Step Team, plus guest speakers David Cotrell, and music producer Joseph Taylor.
Also appearing - all the way from Sao Paulo, Brazil - the alt rock band, Diafanes. Have you ever heard Brazilan rock? It's very cool stuff! Diafanes will be performing in DC the night before, then traveling to Culpeper for an afternoon show. Don't miss this one!
Plus you'll see art exhibits and there may even be a pie-eating contest! All this for just 10 bucks, folks!
In mid-May, there's yet another concert happening at CCHS. It's a 6-hour rock fest to benefit the new State Theater Project! Hosted by CCHS student Nathan Rivas, and sponosred by Culpeper Rock Academy/Culpeper Concerts, it will feature 10+ rock bands and run all afternoon and into the night.
The new State Theater will host plays, movies, dance and music - including rock shows. So, if you want to have a real, honest-to-goodness, state-of-the-art performing arts center right here in Culpeper, then get out to this show and support the effort and your community!
The tentative date will be May 17th, but keep an eye on the newspapers, this blog or the State Theater website for more information. (www.culpepertheatre.org).
But that's not all! Culpeper Concerts will be sponsoring a spring Battle of the Bands at the American Legion Post 330 in late April. With 14 bands playing in one place, it'll be the biggest assembly of bands ever in Culpeper. (The Rock Fest for ALS victim, Lee Linthicum also had 14, but two bands dropped out a day prior to the show, so this BotB will be the biggest gathering of rock bands to-date.)
Finally, there will be two more shows in June, sponsored by Culpeper Concerts. These will be local band shows - one with a punk/ska flavor and the other will be a mix of metal and alternative music for the final show before school lets out for the summer.
Last summer was a great time for rock shows, but the attendance was abysmal. So, the June shows will be the last shows of the summer until Labor Day weekend -- when it all kicks-off again for some great fall shows!
There's a lot of rock shows on tap for the spring season - you'll just need to keep an eye out for them!
