“Leisure is as leisure does.” Yes, I made this quote up. But hey, I’m retired now and can plan my own days and activities from now on, God willing.
Christmas was extremely peaceful this year for my husband and me. Last year, we had the entire “crew” here at our house. It’s always fun and a lot of work, but somehow, this year, I needed some peace and quiet time… maybe just to reflect upon those Christmases past in my life.
I’m a big fan of old movies. Watching Bing and Danny making a play for Rosemary and Vera in Vermont brought back memories of my mother’s taking my sister and me, as young children, to downtown Pittsburgh, on the streetcar, so that we could Christmas shop. Well, she Christmas shopped while instructing my sister and me to watch “White Christmas” twice at the theater! That’s okay, because both my sister and I still know the words to Rosemary’s and Vera’s “Sisters” ensemble.
Eating “Chicken Feed,” (my grandmother’s word for the Chex mix concoction) and seeing the old Alistair Simms’s portrayal in Dickens’s, “A Christmas Carol” is something we have all done for years. No production of Scrooge is as good as this one! Yes, it’s old, but so am I.
Barbara Stanwyck is quite devious in “Christmas in Connecticut.” “Holiday Inn” is a better production, as far as I am concerned, for Bing’s talents. Somehow, “The White Cliffs of Dover” got watched as well, even though it is not a holiday film. Irene Dunne brings tears to the eyes when she loses both her husband and son in England to both world wars. Hearing the brass bands playing John Phillip Sousa marches brings the heart and soul closer to our own war being fought in The Middle East.
May God bless all of our brave men and women overseas who are fighting for our right to have leisure time in this country. My wish for 2008 is that they, too, will someday have loads of Christmas memories to look back upon with their very own families.
Until next time,
Pam
