Triple OT thriller has me dragging
Apologies. This has nothing to do with Culpeper. This really has nothing to do with anything.
I'm exhausted today. Typing this is the only thing keeping me from falling asleep on my desk.
I have to go ahead and blame the NHL Stanley Cup finals game between Detroit and Pittsburgh last night. I am a huuuuuuuuge Detroit sports fan and have watched just about every second of Red Wings' playoff action this year. Last night was the best game yet ... and the worst. Back to that in a minute.
A triple overtime thriller between Detroit and Pittsburgh lasted something like 4 weeks, meaning a late bedtime for yours truly. Coupled with an early morning today, and a long afternoon at the office, and I'm running on fumes.
Last night was the type of game that can enthrall even the most casual of hockey observers. So, for the game itself, in desperate need of a pick-me-up in this country, it was beautiful.
For myself? Well, watching your team lose a Stanley Cup Finals game in triple OT, at home, after winning with 34 seconds to go in the third period is not exactly the lullaby I need to put myself to sleep.
I will gladly take the bump in attention that NHL is getting with this final, and that Game 5 likely provided. It desperately needs it. This area is proof of that. The NHL may as well be a rugby league in Australia around here - the only people that follow it are those that have transplanted from hockey crazy regions: Myself from Michigan, Fauquier Times-Democrat photographer Randy Litzinger from Pennsylvania (yes, we have a running rivalry going right now).
Outside of the two of us, though, I have no proof that a single person has flicked on the games in the region.
It's pretty sad, really, for a die-hard hockey fan like myself. In case you are not a follower of the game, I will tell you right now that there are few events more exciting than the NHL playoffs. They are dramatic every night, with great action and spectacular athleticism.
Hopefully, a few people learned that last night. If they did, they're probably just as tired as I am today.
