William Robert Bowles, Jr. was charged with unlawful wounding after assaulting a 56-year-old man with a plastic yard rake.

Verbal attack spurs assault

A parking lot altercation resulted in the arrests of two men on Friday, March 28, and sent one man to the hospital for wounds caused by a plastic yard rake.

David E. Gosnell, 56, of Culpeper, was arrested shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday night and charged with attempting to commit malicious wounding and felonious assault. Gosnell reportedly used an eight-inch hunting knife to attack William Robert Bowles, Jr., 19, of Lignum, who has warrants pending for unlawful wounding.

According to Lt. Chris Settle of the Culpeper Police Department, a fight broke out between the two men in a parking lot at 1309 Spring Meadow Lane, caused by a verbal altercation.

When police arrived, it was determined that Gosnell had attacked Bowles with a knife as he was sitting in the passenger seat of a friend's pick-up truck. Gosnell continued to verbally attack Bowles while displaying the knife.

After some time, Bowles exited the vehicle and grabbed a plastic yard rake from the truck's cab and began to assault Gosnell, causing multiple lacerations to the face.

Gosnell was treated at Culpeper Regional Hospital for multiple injuries and was later released.

Bowles was wanted at the time for failure to appear in court and was later arrested by the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office. He was released and now has warrants pending for his arrest.
