Weather adds to Culpeper tennis woes

The weather was miserable enough on Monday afternoon. The CCHS girls tennis team did not need an impressive showing from visiting Liberty as well.

That is exactly what the Devilettes got, though, suffering to a 7-1 loss on a cold and blustery afternoon. The No. 1 doubles match was suspended, and will be completed on Friday.

CCHS No. 1 singles player Ernestine Locsin dropped a tough two-setter to Liberty's Katie Sheaffer, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Locsin led the second set 5-2 before Sheaffer charged back.

The Eagles rallied at No. 2 singles as well, with Mark Marks rebounding from a first-set loss to beat Courtney Owens, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Culpeper's Tiffany Jebson fell at No. 3 to Ally Burton, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Liberty's 4-5-6 players - Cat Combs, Maria Eckert and Emily Rinker - completed the singles sweep, downing Kristine Blanc, Anna Green and Jenna Godrey, respectively, in straight sets.

Culpeper's lone point came at No. 2 doubles, where Jebson teamed with Ashley Mullins for a 10-3 triumph over Burton and Combs. Elsewhere, Blanc and Green fell to Eckert and Rinker, 10-5.
