Fauquier too much for CCHS to handle

By Chris Burke

The Fauquier's boys tennis team is considered the odds-on favorite for the district crown. The Falcons once again proved worthy of those high expectations on Monday afternoon, defeating host Culpeper 7-2, despite missing two players.

Culpeper (4-3, 4-2) earlier suffered a 9-0 loss at Fauquier, so the score was at least some improvement.

"I don't know what the story is, but part of it was that we're playing Fauquier," CCHS coach Ron Hutchins said while watching the doubles matches unfold. "As soon as they hear it's Fauquier, they think, 'Oh well, we don't even have to go out there.'"

The Blue Devils avoided a singles sweep when No. 5 Glenn Johnston powered to a 7-5, 6-0 win over Fauquier's Will Whitsell. Johnston then paired with Billy Craven for a win at No. 3 doubles over Whitsell and Jack Doughtett to give the Devils their second point.

"Two of our three losses are to Fauquier, and they're tough to beat," CCHS No. 2 singles player Logan Desabrais said. "You can't just lose because it's Fauquier, but you can take it the other way ... They're Fauquier, you can still kind of use it as an excuse."

Culpeper returns to action on Wednesday at Battlefield at 3:30.
