Big turnout at first EVHS practice

On Monday morning, before the sweltering afternoon heat set in, Eastern View High held its first official football practice — on a baseball diamond.

With the EVHS field still getting some finishing touches before the season starts in less than a month, the Cyclones' historic opening workout was moved to an adjacent ballfield.

Other than that little subtlety, though, the sights and sounds were familiar: Players covered in dirt and sweat, tossing the football around.

It was a proverbial sight of fall seen millions of times, yet, for EVHS, this proved brand new.

"It's exciting," Cyclones coach Greg Hatfield said, taking a break while his players grabbed some water — a frequent occurrence as temperatures climbed near 90 degrees.

Hatfield and his staff sported brand new Columbia Blue EVHS t-shirts, as they looked out on the practice. Much of the day was split into individual position group work.

But there was time set aside for the entire team to observe while Hatfield went through the basics of his intricate spread offense.

Rotating three separate quarterbacks, Hatfield split four wide receivers — two to each side of the line — and worked on his trademark bubble screen. It is a play that proved incredibly effective last season at Fauquier.

Everything appeared to run smoothly. That was no small task given the numbers of players that showed up.

"We had a great turn-out," Hatfield said, "116 guys here."

Monday was the first day that Virginia football teams could hold practices.

The Cyclones have just three more weeks before hosting CCHS in a benefit game on Aug. 22.
