Wine Street park is a donational hit
Citizen response, seeking to honor World War II and Koran War veterans, has exceeded expectations.
The reaction has caused the town to rearrange some of the engraved pavers and reduce the number of the smaller pavers to make way for the increased demand of the larger ones. But the biggest surprise is a donation of $25,000 to construct a separate memorial at the newly dedicated Wine Street Memorial Park.
Culpeper resident Julia Monaco offered to donate $25,000 toward erection of a large monument dedicated to the veterans of those two wars.
Town Planner Bryan Hill was ecstatic about the generous donation. He said additional large donations could lead to a really nice monument. A big monument has been the focus of discussions in the past, but with this donation talks can move forward concerning design and materials.
“The more money we get, the better the materials,” said Hill.
But even before the donation, Hill had to redesign the configuration of the engraved pavers to meet the demand. Initially, the town allocated 24 12-inch by 12-inch pavers costing $100 each. There were also 124 eight-inch by eight-inch pavers selling for $75 each.
The town quickly sold all 24 of the larger pavers and only two of the smaller ones. With the redesign, Hill said the town has only 32 small pavers for sale and 36 more of the larger ones available. The town has sold half of the new larger ones already.
“The town also set aside space for eight benches in the park with a $1,000 donation price tag. All of those sold out. But more will be available.
Trees to be planted throughout the park cost $100, said Hill.
“The (sale) of trees have blown me away,” said Hill. “The benches went faster than I thought.”
Plans call for construction of a 675-foot gravel walking trail in the park. With more donations, it might be possible to cover the trail asphalt.
“We are going to line the trail with trees and several benches,” the town planner said.
Plans also call for two picnic tables with memorial plaques and three interpretive markers talking about the two wars.
“We need donations for them,” said Hill.
