The Culpeper Literacy Council is looking for volunteers who can help adults learn to read, speak English, or obtain their GED. Sign up to receive more information about the council's free six-hour tutor training workshops that are held approximately every 3 months. Hike the strips

On Monday, September 1, customers who visit the Culpeper Colonnade Chick-fil-A wearing any football related apparel will receive a complimentary three-count serving of the new Chick-n-Strips. The new item was released on Aug. 30 to commemorate the 2008 football season.

Warner honored

MIDDLEBURG – The Board of Directors of the Mosby Heritage Area Association (MHAA) is sponsoring a Celebration of American Music on Saturday evening, September 13, 2008, at Huntland. The special feature of the evening will be the presentation of the MHAA 2008 Heritage Hero Award to Virginia’s senior U.S. Senator John Warner. Stepping Out

The Library of Congress' Packard Campus at Mount Pony released its movie schedule for the next three months. The showings begin with The Maltese Falcon on Sept. 4. Some of the other movies scheduled are Dunga Din (Sept. 27), Duck Soup (Oct. 4), All About Eve (Oct. 17) and Yankee Doodle Dandy (Nov. 22). Reservations are needed for the 200-seat theater. Career coach honored

Dean Rowe, Germanna Community College’s Career Coach at Culpeper County High School, and Kay Loving, Germanna’s Career Coach at Caroline County High School, have both been selected for the Virginia Community College System Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Coaching Performance.

Career coaches help high school students learn about career options.

Germanna will receive two $15,000 grants to support their positions during 2008-2009. Out of 45 Career Coaches nominated by the 23 colleges in the VCCS, only 18 were chosen for the Chancellor’s Award. Those selected were able to demonstrate strong coaching performance and cite evidence of their impact on students.

Silver Awards

Hannah Adams, Scarlett Corbin, and Danielle LaRosa, members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 642, received their Silver Award in a ceremony held on June 7. The girls selected to work with the SAFE house on a project entitled, “Making a House a Home.” The SAFE house was in need of both interior and exterior upgrades for its newly constructed facility. The girls created seasonal displays/ pictures to hang on the walls of the children’s playroom, as well as landscaping and planting flowers at one of the houses. They created welcome gifts to be given to guests upon their arrival.

The Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout between the ages of 11 and 14 can earn, is awarded for accomplishments in Girl Scouting and community activities.

 

RRCSB-AAA meeting

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board and Area Agency on Aging will hold its regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. At its offices at 15361 Bradford Road. Fill the trailer

Remington United Methodist Church will have a recycle Sunday challenge, starting Saturday, Aug. 30, and ending Sunday the 31st. Bagged or tied newspapers, bagged aluminum cans and old automotive batteries will be accepted. The Panther Classic golf tournament, which helps support Rappahannock County athletics, is scheduled Sept. 27 at Bowling Green Country Club's north course. Old Dominion Show

The Old Dominion Show, the premiere draft animal show in the state, is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 6, at HITS Commonwealth Park. Sponsored by the Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association, the show presents draft horses, half-drafts, draft ponies, mules and donkeys in halter, riding and driving classes. Farm classes include log skidding, bale moving, obstacles, antique equipment, work hitches, and driving. Admission is $5 for everybody older than age 10.
