Hey Bartender: What happened on Super Bowl Sunday?
The Times spoke with three bartenders from across the Culpeper area about festivies during the big game. Here's what they had to say:
Darlene Pullen, East Davis Street Tavern
Early indications are that Super Bowl XLII was the most watched Super Bowl in history. Was your Turnout larger than expected?
"Honestly, we were slower than I thought we'd be. I think we were a bit too late to advertise we were having a Super Bowl party. And even my parents and uncles have their own Super Bowl parties at home. Usually, the Super Bowl is less busy than some of our regular Sundays."
What was the atmosphere like at your party?
"The ones here were rooting for the Giants, and they were really into it. There'd be a good play, and they'd be jumping up and clapping."
Did you have more fans pulling for the unbeaten Patriots, or the underdog Giants?
"The ones here were definitely for the Giants. I guess that's because they were the underdogs."
What was fan reaction to the Giants' stunning victory?
"Oh, they were yelling and screaming. One guy over there (points to a patron) said they had pulled some magic."
Lots of fans are calling Super Bowl XLII the greatest Super Bowl in history. What were your patrons saying about it?
"You'd have to ask someone watching the game. On my Sundays, I don't have time to think."
Mathew Keener, Glory Day's Sports Bar & Grill
Early indications are that Super Bowl XLII was the most watched Super Bowl in history. Was your turnout larger than expected?
"We got pretty much what we expected. We were expecting a fairly large crowd. I think a lot of people were disappointed because we were accepting reservations, but for the most part, things went well."
What was the atmosphere like at your party?
"Things didn't get crazy until the fourth quarter. Every one was commenting how boring the game was up until the fourth quarter. But once it was close, things started to get crazy. That's when the fans started cheering and throwing their arms in the air. It didn't get loud until that point."
Did you have more fans pulling for the unbeaten Patriots, or the underdog Giants?
"Surprisingly, I'd have to say there were more Giants fans. I guess most people were rooting for the underdog. They wanted to see the Patriots get beat."
What was fan reaction to the Giants' stunning victory?
"People started jumping around, and waving their hands in the air. They were pretty excited. We had a few guys leaning over and saying 'I told you so, I told you the Patriots would get beat.' Just a little fun between friends. It was a good time."
Lots of fans are calling Super Bowl XLII the greatest Super Bowl in history. What were your patrons saying about it?
"They were saying the game was boring. I mean it was such a low-scoring game in the first half. Things got interesting in the fourth quarter, and it was a good ending to the game, but not many were saying it was the greatest Super Bowl ever. I think they were expecting a high-scoring game."
Casey Rudolph, Mountain Run Bowling Center's Lounge
- Early indications are that Super Bowl XLII was the most watched Super Bowl in history. Was your turnout larger than expected?
"Not really. We didn't have that many people at all because our lounge is so new and most people don't know about it. We did have a few people come in to watch the game and order drinks, but I think by the time the bowling alley opened, people had already made plans to go somewhere else."
- What was the atmosphere like at your party?
"The people that we had were having a great time. There was not a lot of talking except for during the commercials. This one guy was talking about how much it cost to have a commercial on during the Super Bowl and just commenting on all of the different ones."
- Did you have more fans pulling for the unbeaten Patriots, or the underdog Giants?
"Most of the people were rooting for the Patriots because they wanted to see an undefeated season, but I was rooting for the Giants because they were the underdogs and to knock down that perfect season would be incredible. Our owner, Darien, was also a Giants fan, so that was pretty fun when they won."
- What was fan reaction to the Giants' stunning victory?
"We closed before halftime because it was getting so late, but we plan to stay open next year. I think it will be a lot busier because more people will know about us and we have such a great atmosphere for football."
- Lots of fans are calling Super Bowl XLII the greatest Super Bowl in history. What were your patrons saying about it?
"They said it was a good game. It was only 7-3 for a while and they were shocked that the Giants were pulling it off and putting up a good fight. There were lots of competitive arguments going on, mostly about the quarterbacks, whether they wanted Tom Brady or Eli Manning to win."
