Timmons named principal of Yowell Elementary School

Catherine Timmons, assistant principal of Pearl Sample Elementary School, has been named the planning principal for Yowell Elementary School, effective Jan. 23.

Mrs. Timmons will serve as the elementary school’s first principal. The 650-student school, currently under construction on Yowell Drive, has planned opening for August 2008.

Mrs. Timmons, 48, has worked as an assistant principal at PSES for five years. Prior to that, she taught elementary school for 20 years and private school for one year.

“Cathy’s administrative experience, her knowledge of elementary school curriculum and instruction and her background as a veteran teacher have prepared her well for this new role,” said David Cox, school superintendent. “She is an outstanding choice to hit the ground running and lead our county’s sixth elementary school to excellence.”

Mrs. Timmons said she’s ready to meet head-on the challenges presented by opening a new school. Her goal is to create a school culture in which children and their parents feel welcome and comfortable.

“I would like Yowell to be a warm and safe place where kids want to come to school,” she said. “It should be a school where teachers are leaders and also effective learners. I’ll be learning too – keeping up with the data and working with teachers in their approaches to instruction in the classrooms.”

Mrs. Timmons resides in Orange County. She holds a Master’s of Education from George Mason University, a Master’s of Science Education from Shenandoah University and a bachelor’s degree from Greensboro College.

Timmons was selected from a field of 10 applicants. Her annual salary will be $74,000.
