Turning the tables

At the start of this week, sophomore Megan Chamberlin had just one career goal on her resume.

Monday night, she tripled that total.

Chamberlin scored a pair of goals for the Devilettes as they revenged a 3-2 loss to Orange County in the season-opener by shutting out the Hornets 2-0 at Broman Field on a cool night at CCHS. It was Culpeper's first victory of the season.

"Coach made a switch earlier in the week and moved me and Melissa (Register)," Chamberlin said. "I went to forward, and Melissa mover to midfield. Obviously, it worked. I'm ecstatic. It feels so good to get that first win."

After scoring just two goals in their first two contests – a 3-2 loss to Orange, followed by a 3-0 trouncing by Chancellor – CCHS coach Erik Kalenga thought his team needed a shakeup

Not only did he make the switch up front, but he also made a change in goal, electing to go with Hilary Carter in net, instead of Nicki Winning. That moved also paid off, as Carter made 16 saves to secure the Blue Devils (1-2) first shutout of the season in her first career start.

"I'm very pleased with how both moves worked," Kalenga said. "I knew that Megan would either score or get an assist. She's great with the ball. And I'm very pleased with Hilary. She was outstanding in goal."

Overall, Kalenga is impressed with his team's offensive production early in the season.

"We should probably be 2-1 on the season. We fell behind Orange early in the opener and had to play catch up all game. We had enough chances to win that one, but we didn't capitalize. We took advantage of our chances this time," Kalenga said. "Our offense is much crisper this season. I'm very excited about the passes that we're connecting on and the plays that we're making."

Kalenga also thinks his team is much improved from last season.

"Today was perfect picture of how we're capable of playing," Kalenga said. "We pretty much controlled this game in all facets. Our offense had plenty of chances, and our defense was brilliant."

The Devilettes will open district play on Thursday when they take on Fauquier, and they're hoping to get off on the right foot.

"District games are always big, especially the first one," Kalenga said. "If we play how we did tonight, we should win that one."
