2008 Community Conversation on Aging

By Hilary Lewis

On Thursday, May 22, Healthy Culpeper's Senior Adult Committee of the Aging Together Partnership will host its annual Community Conversation on Aging. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Germanna's Daniel Center for Advanced Technology.

The Community Conversation on Aging is a public forum for citizens and organizations in Culpeper. This two-way conversation is an opportunity to the community – including older adults, their families and all concerned with senior quality of life and services – to hear about progress and provide feedback on senior needs and issues.

The theme of this year’s conversation is Celebrating the Value of Seniors to Our Community. It will feature guest speaker Dr. Mark E. Williams whose talk is entitled "The 4 Secrets of Successful Aging."

The meeting will include reports on the work of Healthy Culpeper Senior Adult Committee and Aging Together’s regional committees addressing such issues as caregiver support and transportation. Participants will then break into groups to discuss contributions of seniors to our community. This will be followed by transportation focus groups facilitated by staff of the Regional Commission.

As a special feature this year, Bonnie Vermillion will lead participants in Lebed Method (TLM) exercises. The Lebed Method is a therapeutic exercise and movement program that uses gentle motions aimed at increasing range of motion and improving body alignment, flexibility and strength. It is intended to be fun and can be done seated, standing, or in a pool. Ms. Vermillion is currently a TLM instructor at The Powell Wellness Center and Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community.

Lunch will be provided along with information about local resources for older persons, as well as some door prizes.

Reservations are requested but not required. For more information contact Jenny Biche at 825-7615 ext. 2225 or email jbiche@agingtogether.org. You may reach the Aging Together Regional Office at 829-6405.
