Payne memorial
A memorial dedicated to Hunter Payne, an avid skate boarder who was killed in a 2006 accident, will be added to Yowell Meadow Park. Town Council approved the erection of the memorial on Tuesday, May 13.SCOOP, or Skate Culpeper on our park, in connection with the Payne family, raised money towards the memorial. To date, SCOOP has raised $20,010 in Payne’s honor. Those funds went towards the purchase and installation of new skate ramps at the park, which were installed in April.
In the fall of 2007, SCOOP, Found and Sons funeral home, and the Payne family, developed the memorial for Payne. It will be a stone flush with the ground, mounted on concrete.
SCOOP plans to hold a dedication ceremony this spring at the skate park facility for the new equipment donated in memory of Hunter Payne. SCOOP plans to have speakers and professional exhibition skaters for the event.
The Parks and Recreation Commission voted in March to forward a recommendation of approval to council for this request. The requested installation of the stone is off the trail, as one approaches the skate park, near three trees.
