Public buses could have ads

To many, 50 cents doesn’t seem like much.

But that’s the increase being proposed in bus fare for the county’s public buses. And Lanny Horton, chairman of the Public Transportation Advisor Committee, says it could be too much for the low-income riders.

Instead, Horton told supervisors that the committee could place ads on the buses, possibly raising thousands of dollars for the county.

By contrast, Horton argued that raising the charges could mean a drop in riders. He also argued that the move wouldn't produce enough new revenue.

In fact, it would only be somewhere around $760 (in new money from the rate increase),” Horton said. “Which does not go very far with a $4 million shortfall.”
