Devilettes slam into semis

Michelle Beall bombed a grand slam, Sam May added a three-run double and No. 3 seed Culpeper routed No. 6 Osbourn Park 11-1, in the Cedar Run District tournament quarterfinals.

The Devilettes advanced to Wednesday's district semis, hosted by Osbourn. A win there, in a likely meeting with second-seeded Loudoun Valley, and Culpeper could secure a trip to regionals.

Nichole Beall started in the circle for the Devilettes. She quickly ran into trouble in the first inning, when a double, walk and passed ball put Yellow Jackets at first and third with two outs. OP cashed in with a two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

The advantage would not last long.

Culpeper struck for two in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a clutch opposite field single by Logan Stephens.

Michelle Beall's grand slam in the second then pushed the cushion to 6-1, and May's long bases-loaded double in the third stretched the lead out to insurmountable territory. Culpeper led 11-1 after five innings - grounds for a mercy during the regular season, but the two teams played out the game, as it was a postseason contest.
