Police make drug arrest

A routine traffic stop on Tuesday, May 13, gave way to a police chase and ended in drug possession charges for a Culpeper teen.

According to Lt. Chris Settle of the Culpeper Police Department, Robert K. Thompson, Jr., 19, of the 100 block of Garr Avenue, was arrested shortly after 1:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. He has been charged with eluding a police officer, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, and driving a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

The incident that led to the arrest began after Officer Tim Chilton observed Thompson driving a 1994 Lincoln on a revoked driver's license along North Main Street.

Officer Chilton activated his emergency equipment to attempt to conduct a traffic stop, but Thompson refused to stop. He headed north bound on North Main Street, then turned onto King Street and took another right onto Queen Street.

Once onto Queen Street, Thompson stopped the vehicle in a cul-de-sac and fled on foot toward the Grandview Avenue area.

Officer Chilton chased Thompson, taking him into custody and arresting him while he attempted to scale a chain link fence in the backyard of a Farley Street residence. Luckily, there were no injuries to either the officer or the suspect.

Thompson had two bags of marijuana in his possession at the time of his arrest. He was held in the Culpeper County Jail on a $7,500 bond. He was due in Culpeper General District Court on Wednesday, May 21 at 8:30 a.m.
