Better effort still not enough for Culpeper soccer

Just three weeks ago, on May 1, the CCHS boys soccer team had no answers for Osbourn Park. The Yellow Jackets dominated the Blue Devils en route to a 5-0 victory.

So Monday's district quarterfinal, a 2-1 OP win, clearly indicates substantial progress made by the Devils.

Unfortunately, any further improvements will have to wait until 2009 — the one-goal defeat concluded the Culpeper season.

No. 3 seed OP took a 1-0 lead in Monday's playoff contest, but the sixth-seeded Devils managed to rally and knot the score before halftime.

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead 2-1, early in the second and then shifted in defensive mode.

That strategy proved fruitful, as Culpeper could not punch another goal past keeper Joey Dennis.

The CCHS effort was still impressive, on the road against an OP team that entered Monday 11-2-3 on the year.

"Culpeper played a very inspired game, they never gave up," OP coach Larry Nemerow said. "I was very impressed."

With the loss, Culpeper's final record fell to 4-10-1 overall.
