Culpeper Deputies win trophies

Chad McKnight earned fifth- and second-place finishes, and Greg Butler a third place in the recent Mid-Atlantic Police Motorcycle Safety Skills Competition.

The event was held at the Pentagon. There were a total of 123 entries from over 20 different Law Enforcement agencies competing in this year’s event.

Butler received a 3rd place trophy and McKnight a 5th place trophy in division 1 of the safety skills competition. He also took second in the slow ride competition.

I am very proud of the achievements of Greg and Chad in this event, and look foreword to hosting next year’s event” said Sheriff James H. Branch Jr...

The Mid-Atlantic Police Motorcycle Rodeo was the idea of Corporal A.D. Johnson, a motorcycle police officer with the Prince George's County Police Department, Prince George's County Md. In 1979, the first rodeo was held, to build up the skills and working relationships of the motorcycle officers in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Tragically in 1982, Corporal Johnson was killed in an on-duty motorcycle accident. In the spirit of Corporal A.D. Johnson, the organization continues today, heading into its 29th year of operation.

The Mid-Atlantic Police Motorcycle Riding Committee, Inc. (MAPMRC, Inc.) continues to be dedicated to increasing "inter-departmental" communications between police agencies everywhere. It is the desire of the MAPMRC, Inc. to provide better service to the public, not only through encouraging safer motorcycle operation, but also with providing an avenue through which officers would have personal contacts with other officers in various areas, providing an invaluable investigative resource.

The (MAPMRC, Inc.) is a non-profit organization that donates proceeds to charitable organizations. Its main charity is COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc), over the past 8 years MAPMRC has donated over $150,000 to the COPS Kids program.

The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the 30th Annual Police Motorcycle Safety Skills Competition in September of 2009. This annual charity event will be made possible by donations from local businesses and private donations. Anyone interested in learning more about this event or making a donation contact Deputy Greg Butler or Deputy Chad McKnight at 540-727-3444 ext. 702 or visit the MAPMRC web site at http://www.mapmrc.com/
