HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Culpeper looks to build on first-half promise; EV goes for 4th straight win
It won’t count as a “W” in the win-loss column, but Culpeper County High School’s first-half performance against Fauquier High School was a triumph of sorts.
Blue Devils quarterback John Leczano, subbing for Stephen Dodson, hooked up with fellow quarterback Nolan Jenkins for a 44-yard pass play in the second quarter. That led to a 26-yard Adam Mitchell field goal, giving Culpeper its first points against first-team competition this season. Still at quarterback in the fourth quarter, Leczano ran it in from a yard out to end the procedings on a positive note.
Fauquier (4-0) won the game, 42-9, but the Blue Devils (0-4) hope they can parlay that momentum into a respectable showing against C.D. Hylton High School on Friday. Hylton, helmed by former Blue Devils coach Lou Sorrentino, finished 3-7 last season (their first losing campaign in the school’s 16-year history), but is 2-2 after a 28-14 win Friday over Forest Park High School. In that game, Hylton running back Bill Nyantakyi bulled over Forest Park for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Hylton held the Bruins to just 53 total yards and five first downs as the Bulldogs snapped a two game-losing streak with the victory.
Eastern View High School’s winning streak is three times that after a 40-7 win Friday night over fellow new school Kettle Run High School. Quarterback Cody Whitlock threw his fourth touchdown pass of the season and running back Stevie Strother took it to the house five times in that game, picking up 249 yards in the Cyclones’ (3-1) first contest not to be decided by a touchdown or less.
“This wasn’t going to be an easy game, no matter how points we had scored or hoe many points had been scored on them,” said Strother, subtly referring to Kettle Run’s 81-0, 70-0, 52-6 and 40-7 losses earlier this season. “We need to take it one game at a time and and play our game.”
They’ll face Caroline High School, another team with a penchant for close games. The Warriors (3-1) began the season with a blowout over King William High School, but then eked out a 30-28 win over Henrico High School with two touchdowns in the final eight minutes, dropped a 27-20 decision to Powhatan High School and held off Thomas Jefferson High School, 28-12. Fun fact: Caroline’s kicker is Stephanie Keen, the first female high school football player in Warriors history.
