Deeds wins Dem gubernatorial primary; wins all but one Culpeper district
Democratic gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds proved to be the comeback kid in Tuesday night's Democratic primary, winning in a landslide in a three-way race.
He had even less trouble in Culpeper.
With all county precincts reporting, the state senator from Bath County won 60.46 percent of the vote, easily topping rivals Terry McAuliffe (28.06 percent) and Brian Moran (11.46 percent). Statewide, Creeds won 49.97 percent of the vote with 99.8 percent of precincts reporting, versus 26.43 for McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and 23.79 percent for Brian Moran, a former member of the state House of Delegates.
Deeds trailed in the fundraising race throughout, but leapt into the lead in the polls on the strength of a Washington Post editorial and a surge in funding. allowing him to sink $300,000 into ads in Northern Virginia.
Turnout was 4.009 percent in the county, with just 1,108 voters participating in the open primary. The only district Creeds lost locally was Lignum, which opted for McAuliffe over Creeds, 19 votes to 13.
The other race was even more lopsided, with Democrat Jody M. Wagner defeating A. Michael Signer 63 to 29 percent in Culpeper and 74 to 21 percent statewide. Creeds will face former state attorney general Bob McDonnell in the general election in November, while Wagner will face incumbent lieutenant governor Bill Bolling.
