Leavell charged in West Side shooting
Additional charges filed against Stephen Raymond Leavell
Culpeper police officially charged an 18-year-old Culpeper man with five additional felony charges today related to yesterday’s robbery and shooting of a clerk at Westside Grocery on Sperryville Pike.
Besides the initial arrest warrant charging Stephen Raymond Leavell, of the 200 block of East Williams Street, with armed robbery yesterday, police secured and served five arrest warrants on Leavell today charging him with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask, use of a sawed-off shotgun and cut, stab or wound in the commission of a felony.
The charges were not filed yesterday due to a glitch in the magistrate’s computer system.
The 49-year-old clerk, who was shot in the arm during the robbery, was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he has undergone several surgeries, police said. He is listed in stable condition.
Leavell is being held without bond on the charges. He is scheduled for arraignment in general district court at 8:30. a.m., Thursday, Nov. 12.

Culpeper Man Charged in Robbery and Shooting
Culpeper police charged an 18-year-old Culpeper man in the robbery and shooting at Westside Grocery on Sperryville Pike earlier today.
Steven Leavell, of the 200 block of East Williams Street, faces a charge of armed robbery.
Due to a glitch in the magistrate’s computer system, police were unable to secure arrest warrants for additional charges of aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, stab, cut or wound in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask and use of a sawed-off shotgun.
Capt. Ricky Pinksaw said police hope to place those charges tomorrow morning.
Police took Leavell into custody about noon on Virginia Avenue after he was spotted by a Culpeper County deputy sheriff. Town police, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers searched the immediate area near the store looking for a man wearing a green army field jacket, red bandana, blue jeans, dark tennis shoes and a white T-shirt. The suspect had been sprayed with mace by the store clerk during the robbery.
The 49-year-old clerk, who was shot in the arm, was transported by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. His injuries were determined to be non life-threatening, but his condition is stable.
A store customer aided the wounded clerk by putting pressure on his wound to control the bleeding until paramedics arrived.
Police recovered clothing believed to have been worn by Leavell as well as the shotgun not far from the store along several streets.
State troopers and Culpeper sheriff’s deputies assisted town police with the investigation.
Currently, Leavell remains in jail without bond on the armed robbery charge.
