Real estate economic summit Nov. 17

 

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Greater Piedmont Area Association of Realtors will host an economic summit for the real estate community. It will be held at Germanna College in Culpeper from 9 a.m. to noon. Guest speakers include Barry Merchant, Senior Policy Analyst with Virginia Housing Authority, and John Stewart, Chief Economist and owner of Vantage Economics. This summit is designed to enlighten and educate the real estate community on how the stimulus package has impacted them, how it has succeeded, and how it has fallen short. Two businesses team up for the holidays

Wollam Gardens and Like Water for Tulips have teamed up to offer a festive day on the farm from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. Design demonstrations will include garland-making under the tent; centerpiece making in the design studio; wreath making in the greenhouse; and ornament making with the Garden Elves. Hayrides, kids scavenger hunt, hot cocoa, festive music and lights add to the holiday atmosphere. A homemade lunch will be available on site. Reserve a spot now; limited tickets available. Community Touch gets grant

 

Community Touch Inc. in Bealeton, Va., has recently been awarded a grant for $363,631 from the Virginia Department of Housing of Community Development. The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) through Community Touch will assist those in need with such items as rent, security deposits, utilities, credit repair, counseling etc. For more information, call a local Department of Social Services Office or Community Touch at (540) 439-4610 or (540) 439-9300.

Chef Patrick O'Connell to serve as 'celebrity tailgate judge'

The Montpelier Steeplechase and Equestrian Foundation recently announced that Patrick O'Connell, renowned chef and proprietor of the Inn at Little Washington, will serve as the celebrity judge for the annual Dolley Madison Tailgate Competition. The competition will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, during the 75th running of the Montpelier Hunt Races on the grounds of James Madison's Montpelier.

The competition, sponsored by "The Piedmont Virginian" magazine, will begin at 10:30 a.m. This year's top prizes include a one-night stay and dinner at the Inn at Little Washington, and a weekend stay at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville.

There is no entry fee. Contestants must declare their intent to participate by calling the Montpelier Steeplechase and Equestrian Foundation office at (540) 672-0027 by noon Friday, Nov. 6.

O'Connell will be part of a three-judge panel that will evaluate contestants' entries at their individual parking spaces. O'Connell's Inn at Little Washington was the first establishment to be awarded five stars for its restaurant and five stars for its accommodations by the "Mobil Travel Guide." The restaurant has won numerous awards.

Additional Dolley Madison Tailgate Competition judges will be Thom Pellikaan, a past multi-year contest winner, and Candy Lynn, founder and former owner of Cooks and Connoisseurs, a specialty food shop and cooking school in New Bern, N.C.

GPAAR donates to Hospice

 

The Greater Piedmont Area Association of Realtors recently presented a check in the amount of $1,661.34 to the Hospice of the Rapidan to support the programs and services HOTR provides.

As a result of support from four of GPAAR'S Affiliate Sponsors ? Bank of America, Golden Rule Builders, JK Moving and Storage, and Perma Treat Pest Control ? GPAAR was able to hold a raffle and award $1,600 in prizes.

The GPAAR real estate community compassionately recognizes and is very proactive in supporting organizations that serve the needs of the five counties they represent: Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock. Through a Community Services Committee, they are reaching out with activities, which include participation in a Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society, two Red Cross blood drives, and most recently, a coat drive.
