Holiday Tour of Homes Dec. 5
By Lee Langston-HarrisonSpecial to the Culpeper Times
For the second year in a row, The Museum of Culpeper History is hosting Culpeper’s annual “Holiday Tour of Homes” and all the halls are being decked out in Christmas finery for the occasion.
Be sure to mark Saturday, December 5, on your holiday planning calendar for the tour which will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. rain, snow or shine. There will be a variety of festive activities many taking place just a stroll away from The Museum of Culpeper History. Walk or take the trolley (included in ticket price) along historic So. Blue Ridge Avenue, Park Avenue, So. West Street and Oaklawn Drive and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Holidays. Homes on the tour will include floral arrangements crafted by the Culpeper Garden Club.
The 2009 Holiday Tour of Homes, in conjunction with the Museum’s year-long exhibition, War is Hell: A Salute to Culpeper Veterans, highlights a variety of post-war building booms in this rural community. The Tour is dedicated to the men and women in our military ? those Culpeper residents who came home from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam to build homes and raise their families in a small town setting.
An added bonus to this year’s tour is the Burgandine House, considered the oldest residence in Culpeper, and the perfect venue for Colonial re-enactors and artisans in a tavern setting. Finally, there is a very special Open House at the B. Martin Germanna Visitor Center in Locust Grove for all ticket holders. These activities all add up to a very special touring treat for the holidays. Live music, caroling, and re-enactors will enhance the holiday fun.
During the Tour the Museum will serve holiday refreshments, free for all ticket holders. The second annual Hall of Wreaths will be on view at the Museum as well, with decorated wreaths available for sale during the tour by the Culpeper Garden Club. Parking and restrooms are available at the Museum as well.
A raffle of the original framed painting of Auburn After the Battle of Brandy Station, 1863 by Linda Montgomery is also being held that day. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25.
Advanced tickets will go on sale at the Museum and 13 other businesses in Culpeper. Tickets are $15 before Dec. 5, and $20 the day of the Tour (on tour day, tickets will only be available at the Museum, the Culpeper Depot and at each home). For more information, contact the Museum at 540-829-1749, director@culpepermusuem.com or www.homestour.org
Ticket holders are encouraged to save their used tickets again this year. There are 29 businesses in town that will give a Holiday discount to anyone presenting their used ticket before December 30.
Proceeds from the Tour will benefit the Museum’s 2010 education programs, including two full scholarships to the 2010 Camp Culley© day camp, and the Museum’s general operations fund. Contact Executive Director Lee Langston-Harrison for more information at (540) 829-5954. The Museum of Culpeper History is located at 803 S. Main Street in Culpeper.
