• Fuel Applications. The Culpeper County Department of Social Services is accepting fuel applications to help needy families and individuals keep warm this winter. The program runs through Nov. 13. The Fuel Assistance Program is a supplemental program intended to assist households in meeting their home heating energy needs. To qualify for Fuel Assistance Programs, the following income levels are (household size and gross monthly income): 1, $1,174; 2, $1,579; 3, $1,984; 4, $2,389; 5, $2,794; 6, $3,200; 7, $3,605; and 8, $4,010.
Applications can be picked up at Culpeper Department of Social Services, 219 East Davis Street, Suite 100, Culpeper. Applications can be mailed if needed. If help is needed to fill out the form, the hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday -Friday. Call (540) 727-0372, ext. 410.
• The Un-Lucky Inn Haunted House. Best Haunted House in Northern Virginia, 12595 Lucky Hill Road, Remington, sponsored by M.M. Pierce Elementary and Remington VFD. "Scare Me" haunt tours run from 7:30-11:30 p.m., "Fright Free" tours from 6:30-7:30 p.m., last tour starts at 7:15. • The Elderly Angel Tree will be sponsored by the Culpeper Human Services and the Culpeper Department of Social Services for Culpeper residents only. Help is needed from the public. The elderly angel tree is for anyone who is elderly (ages 60 and over) and/or disabled and would like to be adopted for Christmas. If you know of anyone, please call Doris Clatterbuck at (540) 727-0372, ext. 360. There will be only 200 applications taken through Oct. 30.
• Windmore Foundation for the Arts is putting on The Festival of the Trees again starting this November. They are looking for civic agencies, organizations, churches, businesses or individuals who would like to make or provide a decorated tree or wreath for the event. • Food Closet "Need of the Week," the following items are needed: juice boxes, canned vegetables and canned soups. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Food Closet is located at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Phone: (540) 825-1177. Along with needed food this week, they have a new need for a person or persons to pick-up food at Walmart up to 3 times per week. Candidates will need a truck or SUV, as they anticipate up to three shopping carts each time consisting of boxes weighing 20 to 30 pounds. Drivers will make the pickup and take it to the Food Closet, unload onto sorting tables and place the meat in a freezer. • Register now at Culpeper County Library. Nov. 3 is the first day of registration for Tuesday morning Toddler and Pre-School Story Times. The library opens at 10 a.m. Registration must be done in person at the library. Toddler Story Times are held at 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Preschool Story Time is at 10:30 a.m. This is a six-week session, beginning on Nov. 10.
• Culpeper County Parks and Recreation. They still have classes and activities available for registration. 30& up Co-ed Indoor Soccer; Beginning Crocheting & Knitting; Cake Decorating Basics; Kickboxing; Kids Club (things that go); Intro to Fly Fishing; One Stroke Painting; Tai Chi; and on Nov. 16, they will be accepting reservations for a requested Tour of the White House. • Letters from Santa. Make this Christmas unique and arrange for someone special (child or adult) to receive a personalized Letter from Santa that will be postmarked from the North Pole. Each personalized letter is only $5. Request forms are available at the Culpeper Co. Parks & Recreation office (155 W. Davis Street, Suite 100) or online at web.CulpeperCounty.gov. Don't miss out, deadline for requests is Nov. 6.
• Turkey shoots. The Jefferson Ruritan club will be having their annual turkey shoots at the Jeffersonton Community Center starting at 7 p.m. and every Friday through Dec. 4. Now in its 24th year, this is the longest running turkey shoot in the local area. Operators are thoroughly trained. Judging is totally fair. At least $3,000 worth of beef, turkey, ham and other items will be awarded this season. Women and teens have successfully competed here. Good target practice for the season, ideal training opportunities for young or new shooters, fellowship and civic support. 100 percent of proceeds go to scholarships, local public service organizations and other charitable causes. • The Culpeper Minutemen Chorus (A Barbershop Harmony Chorus) has a place for you. We meet every Thursday, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. in the Chorus Room at Eastern View High School. • Halloween Story Times and Trick-or-Treating, 10:30 a.m. at Culpeper County Library. Family-oriented programs are pumpkin-themed and feature stories, rhymes, and songs. • Fall Choral World Music Concert presented by Culpeper Middle School Choral Department at 7 p.m. in the Culpeper Middle School Forum. Features a canned food drive at the door. The sixth-grade choir, seventh-grade choir, eighth-grade choir and boys choir will be singing songs from countries around the world and even some familiar songs from the United States. To go along with the "World Peace" theme, they would like to give back to our community, and will be accepting canned good items and supplies at the door of the choral concert. These canned goods will be donated to the Culpeper Food Closet at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church to support families in need. If unable to attend the concert, but still like to donate, take items to the chorus room the weeks before and after the concert (Oct. 26 through Nov. 6). Items needed at the Culpeper Food Closet are canned vegetables and fruits, Ramen and canned soups, canned meats, canned pasta, chili, and hash, pasta sauce, cereal, nutrition bars, pancake mix and syrup, boxed macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, cake mixes, pudding and Jell-O, and cookies. Families that are income eligible will be enrolled to receive food on a monthly basis. • Habitat for Humanity Annual Meeting. Come celebrate 10 years of building homes in Culpeper. • Healthfest is the annual program for adults sponsored by Healthy Culpeper. The annual event, a showcase that presents area community services, health screens and other information intended to improve the mind, body, or spirit of citizens, is slated for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. • The United Methodist Women are hosting their 22nd Annual Christmas Craft Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Drive. This is a popular, well attended event with over 50 vendors present. Come get a head start on your Christmas shopping. Continental breakfast and lunch will be available. • "The Wellspring of Liberty: How Virginia's Religious Dissenters Helped Win the American Revolution and Religious Liberty" is the topic of a public meeting sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Culpeper History at 3 p.m. at the Culpeper Library. Dr. John Ragosta of Rixeyville and Charlottesville will present the program. Dr. Ragosta, a historian and lawyer who received both his PhD and JD from the University of Virginia has published extensively in both legal and historical journals in the areas of early American history, constitutional law and international relations. He practiced international trade law and litigation for 20 years in Washington, D.C. and has taught at the George Washington University School of Law, the University of Virginia history department and law school, and Randolph College. He has received several short-term fellowships at Monticello's International Center for Jefferson Studies. He has a degree in physics-chemistry and is a bee keeper. • Veterans honored. Veterans of the armed services, active and reserve members, will be raised in prayer during a special service in their honor at Little Fork Episcopal Church. • Culpeper Chess Club meets every Wednesday in the Culpeper County library meeting room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Children from 6 to 14 are welcome. Free lessons are available for beginners.
