Food Closet
nearly bare
The Food Closet shelves are empty. They have served 227 families over the last two weeks, and they are empty, except for what is purchased.
Donations drop off in summer, and the need is steadily going up. A lot of kids are now home for lunch also.
They ask donors to give as much as they can of any variety of food, except for green beans and cereal. Plus, they really need plastic bags, for they are nearly out and use between 1,500 and 2,000 bags per week.
The Food Closet hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Phone 825-1177.
Mammogram unit
in Madison Aug. 14
The Madison Women's 4-Miler Training Program has arranged for the Digital Mobile Mammography Unit from the UVA Health System's Breast Care Program to provide state-of-the-art digital mammograms 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 in the Madison County High School parking lot.
All appointments must be scheduled (no walk-in appointments will be available) before Aug. 4 through the site coordinator, Jean Link of Syria, Va., who may be contacted at (540) 923-4038 or by e-mail at spider_hollow@yahoo.com.
The mammograms performed by the Mobile Mammography Unit are screening mammograms only.
Most health insurance plans cover annual mammography screening. Each patient should contact her insurance carrier to verify that her plan will cover the mammogram and whether the deductible has been met for the year. Each patient must bring her insurance card and identification to the appointment.
For those without health insurance, financial assistance may be available. Contact Financial Aid at (866) 320-9659 or The Every Woman's Life Program at (866) 395-4968 for further information on qualifying for financial assistance. No payment (or insurance co-pay) is due at the time of service.
The Madison Women's 4 Miler Training Program has arranged for the mobile unit to come to Madison as a part of the Program's emphasis on breast cancer awareness and support to those who have or have had breast cancer. The Program prepares female walkers and runners ages 10 and older for the Charlottesville Women's Four Mile Race. All proceeds from the race benefit the UVA Cancer Center Breast Care Program.
